Dinant, “the Daughter of the Meuse,” is a hub located in the heart of the province of Namur and Wallonia. Just thirty kilometers from Namur, it offers a blend of modern and classic charm, seamlessly combining outdoor activities with historical sites. Beyond its natural beauty, which makes it one of the most picturesque corners of Wallonia, the town and its surroundings are dotted with castles and buildings of all kinds. Its small-town feel is ensured by its breweries and abbeys, well-known in the region and far beyond... Just like the famous couques, which are to Dinant what nougat is to Montélimar and Ricard to Marseille! A true local specialty! Dinant, the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone, offers a wide range of activities for all ages.

Walks, hikes and natural sites in Dinant

La grotte merveilleuse

This place truly lives up to its name. The Grotte la Merveilleuse was christened for its breathtaking beauty. Discovered in 1904, it is now a captivating and majestic tourist destination. 650 meters of underground galleries await exploration during a roughly hour-long visit, which will take you through the Glacier Hall and the Great Hall, also known as the Cascade Hall. These galleries are adorned with stalactites and stalagmites of all sizes. Some even have distinctive names like "the Glacier" or "la Tour de Pise."
When the area is quieter, hundreds of bats take refuge there. A river can also be seen during a tourist route reminiscent of a journey to the center of the earth.

The Molignée Valley

The Molignée Valley takes its name from the small river that flows through it. The area is a true delight for those who enjoy walks , and offers opportunities for strategic and gourmet stops. The region abounds with charming little places worth exploring.

Among the many attractions are Maredsous Abbey and the villages of Falaën and Maredret. For the more athletic, rail biking is a must. It's a chance to ride along the old railway tracks , leisurely and pedaling along the Molignée Valley. A true sense of freedom.

The Bocq Valley

On the right bank of the Meuse, the Bocq Valley is, in a way, the mirror image of the Molignée Valley. The Bocq River flows through the neighboring towns of Yvoir and Spontin. It gave its name to the Brasserie du Bocq brewery , located in Purnode. The Bocq Valley is also famous for the railway that bears the river's name. The Bocq Railway is an association stemming from the Railway Heritage and Tourism sector, which operates the former SNCB (Belgian National Railways) line 128. Its appeal to tourists lies in the fact that the association develops its activities while simultaneously renovating this old railway line. Each year, new sections are restored.

Furfooz Park

Caves, holes, archaeological remains nearly 15,000 years old – that's basically what Furfooz Park has to offer. Along a 5km walk, this is a peaceful haven for families, redolent of Provence with its multitude of insects of all kinds. All this along the Lesse River, which has given the area its natural character. Located in the Lesse Valley, not far from Dinant, at the gateway to the Ardennes, Furfooz Park invites you to discover its archaeological, natural, and geological heritage through a family walk of approximately 4km .

Furfooz Park is a 50-hectare nature reserve , officially recognized by the Walloon Region... a welcome change from the tragically lost castles of the area. A simple blade of grass is all it takes to feel at ease. And that's not all. Traces of human occupation date back to 14,000 BC! Highlights include the Roman baths, restored in 1958, but dating back to the Roman era. Restored to their original size, they offer a truly sensory experience!

Restaurants, crafts and local products in Dinant

As we mentioned in the introduction, the couque is Dinant's culinary specialty, just as nougat is for Montélimar. Each couque has its own unique characteristics and contributes to the renown of certain Dinant establishments, such as pâtisserie Jacobs or Maison Collard, where you can also sample another Dinant specialty: flamiche!

Bouboule, the king of mussels

When you bear a name like that and have been located at the foot of the Dinant Citadel, near Adolphe Sax's house, for over 50 years, it's clear you know what you're doing and your reputation is well-deserved. With nearly 40 different recipes for preparing its mussel pots , Bouboule delivers on its promise. As soon as the weather permits, the terrace is always packed.

Le jardin de Florine

Lovers of fine cuisine, stop by for a delicious meal. The setting of a former 19th-century manor house, combined with more modern décor, makes it a unique place that will delight your taste buds in addition to its charm! And as is often the case in Dinant, the exterior of Jardin de Florine opens onto a magnificent garden with a breathtaking view of the Meuse River.

Leffe House and the Abbey

Inside the Leffe brewery , you can admire the expertise honed and refined over nearly eight centuries. An interactive tour will awaken your senses and will, of course, conclude with a delightful tasting of the various Leffe beers, including Radieuse, with its 9% ABV and often cited as the flagship of the brewery. Enjoy it again while admiring the surrounding views of the Meuse Valley.

Leffe Abbey , for its part, is a former priory linked to Floreffe Abbey. It attained the status of an abbey in the 13th century. The sack of Dinant in 1466 caused it significant damage, resulting in the loss of numerous archives. The current buildings date from 1720 and form a beautiful ensemble that lends the site its historical character and monumental style.

Caracole Brewery

At the Caracole brewery , beer is brewed among good families. Generations follow one another with the same enthusiasm, the same passion, and the same expertise. It is nature itself that brings this family and historical tradition to a close. The brewery tour, which recently celebrated its 250th anniversary, retraces the history of the site but also, and above all, the brewing principles and the presentation of the raw materials before, of course, culminating in the grand finale: the tasting of the flagship products: Caracole, Saxo, Nostradamus, and Troublette.

The Mougneûs d'As

A name typical of Dinant and a menu to match! Three choices in all! But that's more than enough to delight gourmets who will feel a bit like they're at home once they've passed through the door of this picturesque establishment which skillfully combines the pleasure of the eyes and the mouth.

Freyr Castle

This is a special place to visit in Hastière: Freyr Castle, its gardens, and the Freyr rocks. They are, in fact, listed as a major heritage site of Wallonia . It's an incredible natural site , one of the most beautiful in Belgium.

Recreational activities

Maison de la patatophonie

The name of the place evokes Patagonia phonetically. But while the South American region is a feast for the eyes, this house in Dinant is a delight for the ears. We find ourselves in an "instrumentium" that, as the visit unfolds, brings together a whole host of everyday objects whose sounds are quite astonishing. You can hear the materials vibrating and wonder if there isn't a soundtrack playing continuously. A must-see, and especially a must-hear.

Bathtub Regatta

There are some annual events that are simply unmissable. In Dinant, every August 15th , the town is packed with people who come to watch the bathtub regatta ! A soapbox race , but even more original because it's on the water . Stretching one kilometer, the bathtub race is a huge success every year, thanks in particular to the enthusiasm of the teams who compete to make their craft unique.

The water ferryman

Open from April until October, the last ferryman is located in Waulsort and allows you to reach the two banks of the Meuse from a boat , just like in the old days.

The most beautiful village in the Ardennes near Dinant

Foy-Notre-Dame

Often considered one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia, Foy-Notre-Dame is the smallest village in the municipality of Dinant . Its renown stems from the discovery of a statue of the Virgin Mary in 1609. Gilles de Wanlin, a carpenter, made the discovery while felling an oak tree. The sanctuary of Foy-Notre-Dame (1623) has always maintained the devotion to Our Lady of Foy. Even today, the village is visited for its historical significance.
Foy-Notre-Dame is also known for being one of the last places in the region to have suffered damage during the Second World War...on a date that remains etched in memory: December 24th and 25th, 1944. A somber Christmas, even though the only damage was material. Today, the village remains a magnificent urban gem with its limestone houses dating back to the 17th century.
